How to watermark a PDF

1. Drop your PDF, or click to browse. It's opened on your device — nothing is sent anywhere.
2. Type your watermark text, or tap a preset like CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT.
3. Adjust opacity, font size, angle and colour until it looks right.
4. Click Add Watermark to download the stamped file as watermarked.pdf.

Choosing the right opacity

Opacity is the one setting that decides whether a watermark helps or gets in the way. At full strength the text sits on the page like a bar of paint and readers have to work around it. Too faint and it vanishes the moment the file is printed on an office laser printer or read on a dim laptop screen.

For most documents 15–25% is the sweet spot, which is why this tool defaults to 20%. At that level the word CONFIDENTIAL is unmistakable at a glance, yet every line of body text underneath stays completely legible. If your pages are dense with tables, screenshots or dark charts, drop to 10–15% so the mark doesn't fight the content. If the page is mostly white space — a cover sheet, a title page, a certificate — you can push to 30–40% without losing anything.

Two related settings matter almost as much. A diagonal 45° angle reads as a stamp, crosses more of the page and is harder to crop away; horizontal reads more like a header and is less intrusive on text-heavy reports. And grey is usually the safer colour — red pulls the eye hard, which is exactly what you want for DO NOT COPY, but on a printed page it can compete with the text and make paragraphs harder to scan.

What a watermark does — and what it doesn't

Worth being clear about before you rely on one: a watermark is a label, not a lock.

What it does well:

• Communicates status instantly — nobody mistakes a page stamped DRAFT for the approved final version.
• Deters casual reuse. Someone about to paste your page into their own deck thinks twice when SAMPLE runs across it.
• Travels with the file. Screenshots, printouts and forwarded copies all carry the mark.

What it does not do:

• It is not encryption. The text and images underneath are untouched, and can still be selected, copied and searched.
• It can be removed. The watermark is ordinary text inside the PDF, so anyone with a PDF editor can delete it in about a minute.
• It does not prevent printing, copying, editing or forwarding.

So use a watermark to set expectations and mark status — that is what it is genuinely good at. If the contents must not leak, a watermark is the wrong tool: put a password on the file, share it through a system that controls who can open it, or don't send it at all. Plenty of sites selling "PDF protection" won't tell you that. We would rather you reach for the right tool.

Is it private and safe?
