Why convert photos to grayscale?
Black and white is timeless. Removing colour draws attention to light, shadow, texture and expression, which is why so many portraits, documents and fine-art prints are monochrome. Converting to grayscale is also practical: it shrinks the palette for cheaper printing, produces clean scans for documents and forms, renders perfectly on e-ink readers, and gives a feed or brand a consistent, elegant aesthetic.
This tool doesn't just average the colour channels — it uses the standard luminance formula 0.299 × red + 0.587 × green + 0.114 × blue. Those weights match how the human eye actually perceives brightness: we're far more sensitive to green than to blue, so a naive average would make skies too light and foliage too dark. The luminance method keeps tones looking natural and balanced instead of washed out or muddy.
What the intensity slider does
At 100% you get a full black-and-white image. Lower the slider and the tool blends the original colour back in — each pixel becomes a mix of its true colour and its gray value — for a partly desaturated, faded or muted look. At 0% the photo is left exactly as it was, so you can dial in anything from a subtle colour wash to a stark monochrome.
JPG or PNG?
JPG gives the smallest files and is ideal for photographs — the tool fills the background white so there are no dark edges. PNG is lossless and, unlike JPG, keeps a transparent background if your source image has one. If you're unsure, start with JPG.
Is it private and safe?
Yes. Toolyard does all the work inside your browser using your own device. Your images are never uploaded to any server, so nothing can be stored, seen or leaked. You can even use it offline once the page has loaded, with no watermarks and no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
What does the intensity slider do?
It controls how much colour is removed. At 100% you get a full black-and-white image; lower values partly desaturate the photo, keeping some of the original colour for a faded or muted look; at 0% the image is unchanged.
Which format should I choose — JPG or PNG?
JPG makes smaller files and is perfect for photos. PNG is lossless and keeps a transparent background if your image has one. Choose JPG for the smallest download, PNG when you need maximum quality or transparency.
Does converting change the image resolution?
No. Only the colours change — the width and height of your image stay exactly the same, so the result is just as sharp as the original.
Are my photos private?
Yes. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser on your own device. Your photos are never uploaded to any server, so nothing is stored, seen or shared.
Can I convert several photos at once?
Yes. Drop as many images as you like, convert them all with the same settings, then use Download all to save every black-and-white image at once.
